ASSIGNMENTS
REVIEW OF THE INTELLIGENCE SERVICES AND CUTA
The review exercised by the Committee over CUTA, in conjunction with Committee P, takes several forms:
Committee R/I and Committee P carry out review investigations into the operations of CUTA. These are initiated either on the Committees’ own initiative, or at the request of the Chamber of Representatives, the competent minister, the director of CUTA or another data protection authority. The Committees may also open an investigation on the basis of a complaint or denunciation by a citizen or civil servant.
Whereas the review of CUTA covers both the legality of the service’s operations and its effectiveness, the review of CUTA’s supporting services only relates to their obligation to communicate information to CUTA on terrorism and extremism.
To carry out their investigations, the Committees may request any documents and interview anyone they deem necessary. For example, they can summon the (former) members of the investigated services, who are then required to testify under oath. The Committees ensure any necessary records are taken and arrange for any useful objects or documents to be seized. The collaboration of experts and interpreters, as well as police assistance may be requested if needed.

Drafting of legal advice
The Committee responds to requests for advice from the Chamber of Representatives or a competent minister on any bill, royal decree, circular letter or other document expressing the political orientations of a competent minister concerning the operations of CUTA. The advice is drafted jointly with Committee P.
Complaints handling
In collaboration with Committee P, the Committee handles complaints concerning CUTA or one of its supporting services.
